DALL-E & QR Codes.

In a digital age where information is just a click away, Quick Response (QR) codes have emerged as a versatile and indispensable tool for a wide range of applications. Their use has balloned until these ubiquous pictures are everywhere, they present a physical representation on a virtual world and because of this the expansion of use cases continues.

Recently we posted our Diwali Celebration using a QR code and while working through the presentation of this we started extending our use case a little, but forst a little history.

QR Codes, What & How

QR codes were first developed in 1994 by Denso Wave, a subsidiary of the Japanese automotive company Denso Corporation. Originally, these codes were created to track automotive parts during the manufacturing process. Their ability to store data in a two-dimensional format made them more efficient than traditional barcodes.

QR codes consist of black squares arranged on a white background. These patterns are read by QR code scanners or smartphone cameras. When scanned, the QR code can link to a website, display text, or perform a variety of other actions. The data encoded in a QR code can be a URL, contact information, a Wi-Fi network's credentials, or even a Bitcoin address - they have extended to many use cases including

  • Contactless Payments
With the rise of mobile payment apps, QR codes are often used for transactions. By scanning a QR code, you can pay for your groceries, coffee, or even transfer money to a friend.
  • Marketing and Advertising
Businesses use QR codes in their advertising campaigns to engage customers. Scanning a QR code on a product's packaging can lead consumers to a website with more information, discounts, or videos.
  • Event Tickets:
Gone are the days of paper tickets. Now, many events and transportation services use QR codes as electronic tickets. Simply scan your code, and you're ready to go.
  • Boarding Passes
QR codes on your smartphone can speed up the check-in process at airports. Just scan your code at the gate, and you're on your way.

Code time - Lets go!

While QR codes are technically black on white, most readers have some flexibility due to the error correction within them. Hence the image that we posted on Linked in is actually a merge of two images, try it out and see!

Once we started down that path it gave us an opportunity to try out some code that is actually pretty exciting, how about merging this approach with DALL-E? So .... here it is, your AI generation of a QR Code generator.

Welcome to QR heaven!

As for everything in the digital space the use of QR Codes has also become yet another attack vector for online scams, theres plenty of reported example of malicious QR Code use so please treat every redirection attempt with the same trepidation you would as an email you are not expecting.
